News from the National Library of Medicine…
PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) is a man-made chemical that is toxic and persistent in the environment. It is used to make products resistant to heat and to repel oil, grease, stains, and water.
Some communities, especially Hoosick Falls and Petersburgh, New York, have been reporting PFOA in their water. New York Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Rep. Chris Gibson, have asked the directors of the Centers for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health to provide educational resources about the health effects of PFOA to upstate New York residents whose water was contaminated with the chemical.
