School Library Month is the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) celebration of school librarians and their programs. Every April school librarians are encouraged to create activities to help their school and local community celebrate the essential role that strong school library programs play in transforming learning.

As spring begins, OCM BOCES SLS is looking forward to the many regional activities we have planned. One of the most anticipated is happening on April 14th with a “Bridging the Gap” discussion that we are co-sponsoring with CLRC. We are bringing together school librarians, academic librarians and teaching faculty to begin discussing how to meet the needs of our P-16 students and our pre-service librarians and teachers. This will be just the first one of many round table discussions that we hope to hold.
We are also looking forward to a May 7th presentation by author L.M. Elliot and the Chittenango CSD Project-Based Learning Team. They have made Ms. Elliot’s author visit a school-wide event and will share how to incorporate an author visit into a PBL project that engages students and gives them the opportunity to take informed action through a community event. This event is open to anyone who would like to attend by registering on My Learning Plan or by contacting Program Coordinator, Doreen Bergman.
The annual Administrator/Advocate of the Year Awards luncheon will be held on May 13th. We are, for the first time, also honoring a collaborative teacher partner for recognizing the school librarian and the school library program as an essential element for student success.
The Onondaga-Cortland-Madison School Library System consists of 23 school districts and 14 non-public schools that cooperate with BOCES to provide library services to member school library media centers.
