CLRC is initiating a new special interest group (SIG) focused on Digital Inclusion & Literacy. We want to bring together library workers, educators, and other stakeholders to talk about challenges and ideas, and to build modular resources available to the wider community.
This meeting is open to all stakeholders in the CNY community (in and out of the library) who might be interested in contributing or otherwise bring experience to the table.
A couple notes:
1. We’ll be having this session over Google Hangouts as well. Please complete the poll to help us determine the time, and we’ll make sure everyone who is interested can attend. In person is always preferred, but we want as many voices in the choir as we can get. http://doodle.com/poll/gs5rw5sgf7642wtz
2. This group will be looking at (but certainly not limited to) issues around: Teaching and Learning basic technology; access policies; home access programs; technology lending; defining basic skills; teaching basic skills at different ages; intersection of technology training and job readiness; preparing for expanded community access; helping patrons understand low-income access options; partnering with your community; partnering with schools; and whatever else might seem relevant.
3. Here are a couple of definitions that might help:
Digital Divide: The gulf between those who have ready access to computers and the Internet, and those who do not.
Digital Relevance: The understanding of the role internet access plays in life to every person regardless of age or socio-economic status
Digital Inclusion: Digital inclusion is the ability of individuals and groups to access and use information and communication technologies
Digital Literacy: The ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills
