2025 ALA Conference
Philadelphia, PA
June 2025
There was a thread of solidarity, hope, and camaraderie throughout the entire conference that was refreshing in these difficult times of uncertainty. I connected with librarians and library workers from across the country and all over the world, including Sri Lanka, Bermuda, and Canada, and it was incredible to share stories and support each other. I attended sessions on advocacy, supporting my staff in times of crisis, diverse programming, and ADA accommodations.
My professional highlight was attending the talks given by Governor Gretchen Whitmer and former Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. My personal highlight was meeting Joe Hill and having him sign his forthcoming book for my husband, not to mention connecting with so many other amazing authors and illustrators.
On a side note, the Marketplace was a sight to behold! I had been told to bring an extra suitcase for all of the books and other merch/swag I would take away with me, but I was entirely unprepared for the experience. Books and more books, authors everywhere signing them, talks and sessions about forthcoming books, vendors, and ALA sections. It was overwhelming in the very best way.
The experience of hanging out and connecting with 15K people, all with a connection to libraries, was something I never thought I would have. I am grateful to CLRC for the $500 grant to make it possible. I will certainly not wait another 35 years for the next one.
