School Library Month is the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) celebration of school librarians and their programs. Every April school librarians are encouraged to create activities to help their school and local community celebrate the essential role that strong school library programs play in transforming learning.

To celebrate School Library Month, the Madison-Oneida BOCES School Library System is sponsoring their second annual student calendar contest.
School librarians shared the contest information with their building. Students were asked to submit original artwork or writing to correspond with ALA School Library Month theme, “Where Learning Never Ends: The School Library Media Center.” The participating school librarians collected the entries during March.
Entries are then displayed in the school’s library during the month of April. Each school holds a contest to recognize their best entries and the “semi-finalists” are sent on to the Madison-Oneida School Library System.
There are four grade level categories: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. A committee from the school library system awards first, second and third place winners in each catagory. The students and a family member will be recognized at the Madison-Oneida SLS breakfast/annual meeting on May 29. First place winners receive a bookstore gift card. All winners have their artwork/writing featured in the student calendar which is distributed at the Breakfast.
The calendars are also distributed to local legislators.
