Online Class: Creating a Culture of Reading in Your School Library
August 2025
The course provided some really great resources from academic studies noting the importance of a culture shift in reading at the secondary level. The one that stood out the most was a podcast about reading role models effects boy adolescents – which is a demographic I find harder to reach.
I also obtained some really great ideas to share with other librarians when we have our meetings through MO BOCES. In the course, we created a Padlet that shared what we were currently using in our libraries. It had some ideas I hadn’t seen on social media or during conferences. I plan on picking some of my favorites to share with others. I also plan on using some of the techniques myself. I shared how I was currently testing out Silent Book Club at my school. We’ve had 3 sessions so far and they have been successful. We hope that over the school year we can have more participation with the community.
The final assignment was creating a plan which was extremely helpful. I plan on making myself accountable to that plan. My plan is to create reading posters for all the staff members at my school. To follow up with that I will be sending out consistent communication about books ranging from picture books to New Adult.
