Academic Libraries open for Community Earth Day Celebrations
Note that one of the featured libraries in this article is our neighbor just slightly to the west, the College at Brockport!
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston’s Moody Medical Library will participate in the campus-wide 24th annual Earth Day celebration on April 22nd. With the theme “Recycling…just what the doctor ordered” employees and community members will learn how they can support UTMB’s sustainable efforts throughout the year. The celebration will include a trash fashion show and an upcycle art display.
The Favley Memorial Library will hold a panel discussion on the “Solutions to Climate Change” as part of Villanova University’s 45th Annual Earth Day celebration. Panelists whose careers are focused on working towards a solution to some aspect of climate change will discuss the work they do, and the challenges and opportunities of addressing climate change. The focus this year is the role of science in society. A sustainability fair, farmer’s market, Campus “climate march” and Earth Day services will round out the weeklong event.
From April 15 – 22, 2016, the Weinberg Memorial Library will host an Earth Day art show displaying works from faculty, staff, students and the local community who were inspired by caring for the environment. The University of Scranton has a week full of events including an Earth Day fair with student research projects and local sustainable businesses as well as bike tour, electronic recycling and document shredding day and street sweep.
The College at Brockport’s Drake Memorial Library is a sponsor of “Green is Gold Gamilfication” during Earth Week. Each day a new question related to campus sustainability events and practices will be opened on the College’s Sustainability website for College at Brockport students to answer. The library will also handout Eco-friendly wildflower weed bookmarks and displaying books and materials related to Earth Day.
FISHBOWL, an outdoor public sculpture designed by Professor Ken Reker and students from the Art + Design Department will be on display in the Berry Library Commons during Earth Days celebration. The sculpture consists of large plastic bottles and petroleum-based products and is kinetic allowing the inhabitants of the bowl to move with wind and air currents. Several films and panel discussions will be held on the Salem State University campus.
