This past week Paramount Pictures and the Pathe production company began filming their latest project “Selma” in Atlanta, GA. Later this summer production will move to Selma and Montgonery, Alabama.

“Selma” stars David Oyelowo as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The movie will focus on the “historic Selma-to-Montgomery march that eventually led President Lyndon Johnson to sign the Voting Rights Act of 1965”. The movie will also include Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon Johnson.

The movie is expected to shoot in Selma  June 23-26 to film on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, before heading down Dexter Avenue toward the Alabama State Capitol on June 27.

Ava DuVernay, whose 2012 drama “Middle of Nowhere” won critical acclaim, is directing the project.

According to chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, Brad Grey:

“This story will resonate deeply with not only those brave men and women who fought for voting rights alongside Dr. King, but also the countless millions of people who continue to fight against discrimination in voting today”

Celebrities connected with the project include Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt. A release date has yet to be determined.

  1. Yup. They’re filming in Marietta Square this week… which totally screwed up my lunch plans today. At least the movie itself is about a good cause!
