It’s a big week for Veronica Mars fans as production begins on a new limited series that will air on Hulu next year.
Mars fans, affectionately known as Marshmallows, will get eight new episodes of the series set 5 years after the crowd-funded Veronica Mars movie which premiered in theaters back in 2014.
The show, starring Kristen Bell in the title role, ran for three seasons, from 2004 – 2007, first on UPN, then on The CW. In addition to the series and movie, there have also been two Veronica Mars novels. Both the original series and movie will be available on Hulu in advance of the new episodes.
“People are wondering what Veronica Mars is doing right now,” Bell recently told EW Radio. “There’s never been a lapse in the fanbase. When I allude to anything Veronica Mars online, people lose their marbles. And it’s so wonderful and cute to know that it means something to people still.”
Here’s what fans can expect from the new series:
Jason Dohring(Logan Echolls), Enrico Colantoni (Keith Mars), Percy Daggs III (Wallace Fennel) and Francis Capra (“Weevil” Navarro) and Ryan Hansen (Dick Casablancas) have all signed on to return to the series, along with Bell.
According to Hulu, Neptune’s spring breakers will be turning up dead and giving Mars Investigations plenty to work on. And, according to creator Rob Thomas, aspects of the books will also be incorporated in the series – including an appearance by Logan and Veronica’s dog, Pony.
This isn’t the same ‘ol Neptune we’re used to. “It’s going to be a darker world. It’s going to be a bigger world,” Bell also told EW Radio. “It’s definitely not going to be what we did on UPN or The CW, so I want to brace fans for that. It’s going to be darker and bigger and more cinematic and definitely a little bit different.”
And, most importantly, we have a few hints about where the new episodes will be filming. Like the movie, the new series will be shot entirely in Los Angeles (the original series was filmed in San Diego). This means we might see some of the same locations from the movie pop up in the series, including Keith’s house (located at 339 Wisconsin Ave, Long Beach) and the Mars Investigation office ( 635 Mateo St, Los Angeles). The series will also film on the Warner Bros. lot which is where we think they will be on Wednesday, Nov. 7, according to a recent casting call.
