A variety of water supply alternatives are being investigated by Watershed Protection to address the concerns of major water providers in the Ventura River watershed regarding potential short-term impacts attributable to the flushing of accumulated fine sediment from Matilija Reservoir as part of the dam removal sequence. An initial investigation in 2016 identified three categories of options for further analysis: replacement supplies, re-use and conservation, and treatment technologies. Watershed Protection is evaluating these options in consultation with downstream water providers as part of the CDFW 65% planning project. Depending on such factors as cost, risk and uncertainty, it is anticipated that the selected final alternatives will be implemented either as discrete projects prior to dam removal, or as adaptive management measures following dam removal.
