Sometimes less is more. And the Lemoyne College library can prove it.

Thanks to Library Director, Bob Johnston, and Access Services Librarian, Lisa Chaudhuri, for taking a beautiful afternoon to talk to a group of First Monday attendees about the library’s recent redesign and plans for its future.

Three service points of reference were consolidated into one. This firstly, eliminated the space-hogging reference desks and secondly, utilized staff and student workers in a much more efficient way.

On-call librarians, appointments with subject librarians, scheduled supervisors and increased use of virtual reference have streamlined the workflows and increased services.

Library staff noticed that having students at the reference desk as the first point of contact was less intimidating for other students and their reference stats increased. The student workers are now cross-trained in reference triage.

There are three new media study rooms, bookable online and roomy enough for groups of five. A cool feature is that they are easily removable and moveable. As the library creates more common spaces, these rooms may need to take a walk to other areas.

And sometimes more can be a good thing. What do students need more of? Plans are underway to add more outlets and…coffee.

The Noreen Reale Falcone library houses the Wilson Art Gallery and is the keeper of seven paintings and four gorgeous tapestries depicting Polish history. Download the brochure.
