Michigan Jumps on the ‘Breaking Dawn’ bandwagon

Premiere of Summit Entertainment's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" - Party

After word got out that Louisiana was in the running to be home to the final Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn, Michigan’s Film Office decided they wanted a shot too.

Janet Lockwood, director of the Michigan Film Office, said her staff does plan to contact the production company (Summit Entertainment) to suggest the state as a potential film location this fall.

“We would love to have them film here,” said Lockwood. “The film locations would become tourism sites for people who are fans of the movies and books.”

If the Twilight franchise does move from Vancouver (where New Moon and Eclipse were both filmed) it will most likely be because another location was able to show them the money. And while Michigan’s tax incentives are higher than Louisiana’s, Louisiana gives films an additional 10 percent tax credit for crew hired from their state. Michigan caps its tax credits for salaries at $2 million.

There is still no solid evidence Summit will change locales for the final film, but, considering the revenue and frenzy that the Twilight Saga creates all over the world, you can’t blame Michigan for trying.

  1. I think it would be great to have the film in MI due to the fact that it is so close to Canada a lot of the background will fall into place, LA might be a good option if they planned on touching on sceans for South America. I also thing that the ability to get away from crazed fans would be easier in MI. Not to say that I’m sure some will try to make the drive. But the wooded areas are off the beaten path. I live in Indiana so I guess it does not affect me ether way. But I just thought I would put that out there.

  2. Why move from Vancouver? Many of the crew who worked on the last two movies all live in Vancouver, wouldn’t it be more of a headache to hire a whole new crew than to just stay where they are, where all the scenery and everything will have continuity with the previous films?
