One of our best L.A. tipsters, Chad, recently had the chance to meet Woody Harrelson on the set of Rampart in San Pedro, CA, but that wasn’t the first movie set he’s tracked down. Chad recently told us a bit about his experience meeting Woody and his favorite hobby- autograph collecting.
My hobby is the thrill of the hunt for that star’s autograph. I work in San Pedro and whenever something is filming in Long Beach or San Pedro area I go. I collect autographs on baseballs ( its just a thing I like, cleaner autograph) I don’t go for any ONE person, I just go for love of the hobby.
I noticed on Tuesday on OLV that Rampart was filming in San Pedro. So I planned my day to get off work at 8:15 A.M. I do early morning run-ins, it seems to me that the celebs are relaxed and not so involved in their scene. I also try to get them at their makeup trailer.
I got to BASE CAMP at 8:30 A.M. and stood around for 25 minutes and asked one of the crew members who was on set. I had my list of who was in the movie and who I was going to try for. I went down my list and “No, No, No, No, Ice cube was on set yesterday.” UGH. They said the only person there who was on my list was Woody and he was one I wanted for my brother so I went off to go “on set”. I found it in 10 minutes and parked my car.
The scene was at a house with sidewalks on both sides and security on both ends. There were no barriers, just security and 2 police officers. I grabbed the BARE ESSENTIALS (less you have, less noticeable you are) 2 baseballs, and a pen. I also had my CAMERA in the pocket! I don’t take pictures on sets seeing they don’t want everything “leaked” out. I was there for maybe 40 minutes when the police officer came up to me and asked what I was there for. I said I was trying to get Woody’s autograph and said I am staying back here (200 feet away) and was waiting for him to come my way (hopefully). He was cool and asked what’s in my pockets and I showed my 2 baseballs. he was fine with that too. He said he would try to get his PA to see if she could get my stuff signed. I was thankful but wanted to get it from him myself.
About 15 minutes later they yelled CUT and the wrap-up team had to move all the stuff for the next scene outside. Well, I saw Woody down there with a PA and I took a shot in the dark and asked the cop if it was OK to stand on the sidewalk across the street and try to call for him. He said yeah (I was the only person there which made it easier too) so I went down there called him (about 20 feet away) and he said, “yeah”, and waved me over. I thanked him and handed him the first baseball, asked for his autograph and to have “Natural Born Killers” (my brother’s favorite movie) inscribed on it. I handed the second ball to him and asked for “White Men Can’t Jump” on it. He looked at me all puzzled and asked where I was from, than asked for my name. I said “Chad” and then right away I asked if he could put my brothers name on the other one and he did a 180 and was happy and said “SURE!” He must have thought I was an Ebayer or something. I got them both autographed and than asked for a picture and he said “Yeah.” The PA took the photo for me. I thanked him again. I also thanked the police guy, never know when I may see him again ON SET 😉
The one thing I learned about on set autographs in L.A.) is to get close to set. If you ACT like you belong and don’t go crazy you can get on very easy.
Thanks again to Chad for sharing his story and his tips for getting autographs on set! If you have any tips for meeting celebs that you’d like to share and want to be one of our featured readers, let us know at olv@onlocationvacations.com!
