‘First X-Men: First Class’ photos leaked from Jekyll Island

As we’ve reported, X-Men: First Class started filming on Jekyll Island, Georgia last week and now the first photos from the shoot have been leaked.

According to DailyBlam, “It has already been speculated that this could be the backdrop for Muir Island, a small, fictional island off the northern coast of Scotland that has been the backdrop for many X-Men stories in the comic books. The island was founded by Dr. Moira MacTaggert, played by Rose Byrne. Just today, images from the set have been leaked showing green screen construction and the tattered frame of the X-Jet (a modified SR-71 Blackbird that X-Men use for transportation).”

Check out a few of the photos below:

  1. That is so cool! Kids of all ages (including me!) are salivating for the release of the movie. It’s amazing what they can do with movie magic.

Jekyll Island is one of my families favorite places, our home away from home. We got a few shot of the set in November when they were bringing in those palm trees. Security was tight on the land side anyway.

Good to see more movies being made on the island. “X-Men: First Class” joins classics like “Glory” and “The Legend of Bagger Vance”, and “dogs” like the heist movie “Jekyll Island”.

  2. Something tells me this is not Muir Island. The fictional Muir Island in the Marvel comics is located off the coast of Scotland. I don’t recall any palm trees in Scotland. Although they may use the sandy beaches and dunes to double for Muir, which is possible and CGI the rest.
Other than that, islands in Scotland are machair (grasslands), rocky, damp and overcast because they receive so much rain year round.

  3. I was staying at The Cloister on Sea Island… and January Jones’ suite was 2 doors down from mine. I was sitting next to her and Kevin Bacon and the director of the film as they enjoyed one of the most fabulous hotels in the world. I bumped into them several times but never spoke to them to allow them their privacy as I knew they were at The Cloister because they would be able to just be themselves without crazy hotel guests bothering them.
It was nice to see Hollywood stars as normal people.

  4. This may tell my age…but wasn’t “View from Pompeii’s Head” and “Conrack” also filmed there. I know there were scenes in Brunswick (the town closest to Jekyll Island) cause my dad was an extra, and I think some scenes were filmed on the islands too. (St Simons and Sea Island, as well as Jekyll)

    • Conrack might have been filmed on Jekyll really not sure. Im from the area and I remember parts of it being filmed on Sapelo Island. A little north of Jekyll.

  5. surferboi, you are probably correct about some of Conrack’s island scenes being filmed on Sapelo. I only saw the filming in Brunswick (which was actually Charleston in the story, I believe). I thought some scenes were shot on St Simons and Jekyll also, but perhaps not. A scene looked very much like “Pink Chapel” ruins on St Simons and others looked like Clam Creek area on Jekyll. We still watch the movie often since my father was an extra, and I still love the “Golden Isles”. I grew up there, but moved away in the late 50’s.
