Marvel may be giving you the opportunity to join The Avengers Initiative in NYC

According to The Daily Blam, Marvel will be giving fans an opportunity to meet the cast of The Avengers in New York City.

Meet the cast of S.H.I.E.L.D. and join the Avengers Initiative! Marvel Studios is to announce a S.H.I.E.L.D. Assembly in New York City for Spring 2011. During principal filming, S.H.I.E.L.D. will be out in full force in NYC to recruit and find new members. Cast members on hand include Samuel L. Jackson (Director Nick Fury), Clark Gregg (Agent Phil Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Agent Maria Hill) and Kevin Pennington (Agent Wendell Vaughn) and three Agents yet to be announced. Fans will get the chance to meet the stars and get their photograph taken with them at the event.

Further Info will be provided in April or May.

Fans who can’t make it to NYC should not fret, something similar will happen at Comic Con in San Diego.

But, don’t get too excited yet. Some publications are also reporting that the events (f they are real) may be canceled because the information was leaked prematurely.

In my opinion, the film doesn’t need any marketing gimmicks, its going to be a blockbuster whether they cater to fans via events like this or not, so why bother? With that said, I’ve felt for a long time that the studios will start taking matters into their own hands and welcoming fans into the filming process. This would allow them some control, rather than just having fans show up at sets and studios uninvited (thanks to online resources like Twitter, Facebook, and of course OLV, that have made filming locations readily available), and act as a pretty substantial early marketing tool. Maybe Marvel will be the first to embrace this concept, and maybe this is a first step toward a more formal initiative. We can only hope.

The Avengers begins filming in New Mexico in April. Portions of the movie will also be shot in Detroit, L.A., and New York. The film will bring together Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) for the first time.
