You may have seen Russell Crowe or Christian Bale making the talk show rounds recently promoting their new film 3:10 To Yuma, opening September 5th. The movie, a remake of the 1957 Western classic of the same name starring Glenn Ford, was filmed in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico. This proved to be a perfect location for capturing the look of the dry, hot West (even though it snowed during the shoot.)
One location used extensively throughout the shoot was Bonanza Creek Ranch located just outside of Santa Fe. The working ranch features a “ghost town” on its premise making it a great spot for Westerns. The ranch has been featured in several classics including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Easy Rider, and Lonesome Dove. If you are interested in South Western film history, be sure to check out our one time location of the week, Old Tucson!
Ghost Ranch, also outside of Santa Fe, was used as a location in 3:10 to Yuma as well. The Ghost Ranch has a fascinating history and offers tours which include an educational look at the inspiration artist Georgia O’Keefe found on this land she called home for over 50 years.
Santa Fe, also featured in the film, is a perfect getaway whether you are looking to relax at a spa or spend a weekend shopping. The city offers, skiing, nightlife, golf, beautiful scenery, and great food. If you are planning a getaway to Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico, check out our Summer Movie Extravaganza which includes another fantastic NM location used in Transformers, White Sands National Monument.
