Tom Cruise to portray Jack Reacher In ‘One Shot’

Tom Cruise to be Reacher in One Shot movie

Well this is certainly interesting news, according to Deadline, Tom Cruise has officially signed on to play  the role of ex-military investigator Jack Reacher in the Paramount adaptation of the Lee Child novel “One Shot”.

The movie will see Cruise reuniting with Oscar-winner Christopher McQuarrie, who scripted the Cruise vehicle “Valkyrie” and co-wrote this winter’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”. McQuarrie is both writing and directing the “One Shot” adaptation, which is expected to begin filming this fall.

Cruise’s involvement with “One Shot” already has many fans outraged due to his obvious lack of resemblance to the Reacher character who, as described by original author, is 6’5” and 250 pounds worth of scarred muscle with chilling blue eyes and dirty blonde hair. However, Child has gone ahead and expressed his support for the actor’s casting, saying “Reacher’s size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way.”

We’ll keep you posted on the status of “One Shot” as more information is released and a filming location is confirmed.

Cruise is expected to spend the rest of summer in Miami where he is currently filming Rock of Ages.

  1. One of the most inappropriate castings ever. Every characteristic of Reacher’s; BIG, tall, brawny, rugged, etc are totally lacking in Cruise. Artistic license is one thing, but casting the antithesis of a character is another. Like….
Don Knotts as The Incredible Hulk
John Candy as The Thin Man (except he might have made that work 😉
Danny DeVito as Kareem Abdul Jabbar

    this is actually kinda fun!

  2. Well Cruise must of paid someone alot of money to get this role. Cruise is not the one to do this. Now I know his ego is massive and his intelligence limited. I will never see him as Reacher, this movie is a waste. Our author is certainly a sell-out. He is ruining a series of books that he created and ruining a great character. It is amazing what money will do to people. Apparently Cruise can buy everyone’s integrity, and get by with it.

  3. I totally agree, when I first read about Cruise taking over the role I was in utter shock, how could Lee Child ever agree to this, I have decided I will not see this movie, even thoug I love the story.

  5. Seriously? I understand if you don’t want a literal translation, but 6’5, 200+lbs, blond hair and blue eyes does not equate to Tom Cruise. Please, at least try to cast someone that might represent what the character looks like in the reader’s mind.

  6. Noooooooooooooooo….to Cruise as Jack Reacher. Bad Bad Bad decision. I wont watch it. Jack Reacher is my favorite book character. In no way does Cruise fit this part.

  7. I think RKO accidentally hit on the answer; someone (as in everyone) in casting can’t read very well. Reacher is 6’5″ NOT 5’6″!!! Mystery solved.

  8. I am a Jack Reacher fan and I believe it is outrageous to cast Tom Cruise!!! I really love the books and I hoped that the massive protests would make Lee Child change his mind. Tom Cruise is not big, doesn’t know to act and will distroy the image of Reacher for those who haven’t read the novels yet. THIS IS A SHAME!!!

  9. I was hoping the article I read was wrong…Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, are you kidding? I Can’t think of anyone worse…maybe PeeWee Herman…he might be a worse choice. I was looking forward to the movie, but forget it, not with Tom Cruise. This is actually sad. If they want a big name…why not Liam Neeson…he would be a great choice.

  10. I’m very disappointed with the choice of Tom Cruse for the role of Jack Reacher. I have enjoyed reading all of Lee Childs book with Reacher’s character, I like the image of 6’5″ tall, rugged 200+, blonde hair, blue eyed Jack Reacher. NEVER in my wildest imagination did I EVER picture Tom Cruse. Nothing against Tom Cruse, just a very bad choice for this movie. I won’t be watching it.

  11. I’ve read from several sources now that the movie rights were purchased several years ago, by Tom Cruise’s production company… so I guess he did in fact ‘buy the role’ and has now cast himself as Jack Reacher… a crushing blow to Jack Reacher fans everywhere, including this one. Even worse than Mr. Ego, Tom Cruise actually thinking he can pull this off (after we would expect something like this from Tom Cruise, right?), is knowing that Lee Child not only disrespected the character he created, but the many fans who have supported him by becoming a classic sell-out. Yep, the rights were his to sell… and apparently money was more important to him than retaining any say whatsoever in the movie, including who would be cast as the main character… which is kind of important. It does get worse… if you are to believe Mr. Child’s weak attempt at trying to support the movie, he seems quite thrilled with having Tom Cruise play Jack Reacher… which is just sad. He can’t possibly think there is anything good about Tom Cruise playing Reacher, though I’m sure he wants to support the movie. But trying to feed fans such a load of crap is a further slap in the face. I’ve lost a lot of respect for Lee Child. Very sad.

  12. As the thousands of outraged fans across the net agree, Tom Cruise is possibly the worst choice of casting for Reacher since Val Kilmer played batman. Except Kilmer was at least in the range of the part. Cruise is totally off and with the far-‘reaching’ outcry from fans, why not change casting NOW while there’s still time?? Tom we beg you turn the role over to someone else.
