Stardust, in theaters now, may not have this summer’s biggest box office numbers but it does have this summer’s most stunning scenery.
This fairy tale with a big name cast including Robert DeNiro, Michelle Pfieffer, and Claire Danes, was filmed during the spring and summer of 2006 in the UK. Here is a guide to four of the main locations used in filming, for a list of all locations, check imdb.com.
Much of the film was made in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands. We stumbled across the Highland Council’s report on filming in Ross. The document states they had nothing but positive feedback from the location manager and that they were hoping to double the amount of revenue they made in filming from the year before. Here is a list of hotels in the area. This site also contains information about what there is to do and special events taking place year round.
The town in Stormhold in the movie is actually Elm Hill in Norwich, England. Elm Hill is a beautiful cobble stone street lined with Tudors, many built in 16th Century. It is now home to quaint art shops and antique dealers. Luckily someone has created a wonderful guide to Norwich, see it here or here is the city’s official guide.
Filming also took place in the woods near the Ashridge House in Hertfordshire, England. The house is now a business school whereas the rest of the land is part of the National Trust. They offer guided tours of the property or you can walk on your own through an extensive network of country paths. Visit the National Trust website for more information, to make reservations, or to learn about upcoming events at Ashridge. If you would like to stay near Ashridge, The Grove is nearby and has received excellent reviews.
Here is a pictorial guide to this quant town. Castle Comb is located in Chippenham, Wiltshire, about 2 hours west of London. Here is a map showing the route from Wester Ross to the Castle Comb area. This route takes you across the UK making it perfect for taking your time exploring the country side. If you stay near Castle Comb, try The Manor House. This 14th Century manor will make you feel like you have stepped into Stardust.
Finally, filming was done in Castle Comb, England.
