As many people head to the movie theater to see The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, and Helena Bonham Carter; if you’re in the New Mexico area, you can see where the movie was filmed!
Disney’s version of the Wild West was built at Rio Puerco, I-40 west of Albuquerque. A town was built here for the film including a bank, a ranch, a granary, a saloon, and a train station. Five miles of track, that was fully functional, was also built around the town.
Another filming location was Angel Fire Resort & Flying Horse Ranch, Angel Fire NM. It is a great place to visit in the winter or summer. They offer mountain biking and a chance to try the states first zip line high above the treetops.
Filming also took place at Pajarito Ski Area, Los Alamos, NM. Located just outside of Los Alamos, it is a great place to go any time of the year. In the summer it has biking and hiking trails, and in the winter it offers skiing and snowboarding.

The Comanche village scene where the Lone Ranger and Tonto were captives, and Custards charge at the village were all filmed in the Headquarters area of the Valles Caldera National Preserve.
Oops. That would be General Custer’s charge at the village. 🙂
