Where you can find ‘Cloud Atlas’ filming in Glasgow this weekend

This week Hugh Grant joined the all star cast of Cloud Atlas which already included Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess, Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Susan Sarandon.

The movie, which is an adaptation of David Mitchell’s award-winning novel, features six interlocking storylines, “each set in a different location and a different era, spanning from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic future”.

The film begins shooting this week in Glasgow, Scotland before moving to Spain and Germany. The production will have two full units working simultaneously for the duration of the shoot.

Thanks to one of our readers, Liam, we have learned where the movie where will be filming in Scotland on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday!

Here is the official letter that was distributed to Glasgow residents yesterday explaining where and when filming will be taking place:

To Whom It May Concern

We are writing to inform you of our intention to film scenes for a new feature film entitled ‘Cloud Atlas’ in Douglas Street and St Vincent Lane between Friday 16th and Sunday 18th September 2011.

The film is an adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel of the same name, and was a best-seller several years ago. The story revolves around six interlocking lives in one adventure, circling the globe and reaching from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic future.

This letter is intended to give you a brief overview of our plans.

Douglas Street and St Vincent Lane are going to play an important role in the film as the main location for the climactic action sequence in one of the six story lines which is set in San Francisco in the 1970’s. Our scenes will involve a car crash and shoot out on Douglas Street (on the junction with St Vincent Lane) followed by a chase down St Vincent Lane. To facilitate filming this sequence safely we have been liaising with Glasgow City Council who have agreed to implement road closures on Douglas Street and St Vincent Lane from 0600 on Thursday 15th September to 0600 on Monday 19th September.

Thursday 15th September – Preparation and Dressing the filming areas which will involve painting out road lines and removing road signs (0600 approx – 2000 approx) Roads Closed:

Douglas Street closed between St Vincent Street to Bothwell Street
Douglas Street closed between Bothwell Street to Waterloo Street
Access to St Vincent Lane will be closed from Douglas Street but will be maintained via other routes

Please note that although St Vincent Lane will be open on Thursday 15th September our art department will be working within the lane to dress and cover modern signage.

Friday 16th & Saturday 17th September – Filming (0700 – 1930) Roads Closed:

Douglas Street closed between West George Street and St Vincent Street
Douglas Street closed between St Vincent Street to Bothwell Street
Douglas Street closed between Bothwell Street to Waterloo Street
Douglas Street closed between Waterloo Street to Cadogan Street
St Vincent Lane closed from Pitt Street to Wellington Street

Please note traffic and pedestrians will be held on all junctions that cross Douglas Street and/or St Vincent Lane by Police Officers and stewards while we are actually filming (for short periods at a time).

Sunday 18th September – Reinstatement and Filming (0600-0600 Monday 19th September) Roads Closed:

Douglas Street closed between West George Street and St Vincent Street
Douglas Street closed between St Vincent Street to Bothwell Street
Douglas Street closed between Bothwell Street to Waterloo Street
St Vincent Lane closed from Pitt Street to West Campbell Street

It’s interesting that the letter points out that the scene they’re filming will be set in San Francisco just weeks after the Brad Pitt film World War Z shot Philadelphia-set scenes in Glasgow too. We can’t help but wonder if more American films will be choosing Glasgow to fill in as American cities thanks to their production tax breaks.
