Though we recently reported that the upcoming Tom Hanks movie, Captain Phillips aka Captain’s Duty aka Maersk Alabama, would begin shooting in New Orleans on February 13, we’ve learned there has been a change in plans.
“Maersk Alabama will not be filming in Louisiana due to logistics. The last our office heard was that this production was moving overseas,” wrote Kristen Hill, Public Information Officer at Louisiana Entertainment, in an email to OLV.
Captain Phillips stars Hanks as real life ship captain Richard Phillips who allowed himself to be taken hostage by Somali pirates in exchange for the safety of his crew. Phillips’ memoir which the movie is base on, A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, recounts his three days in captivity and his dramatic rescue.
According to various industry listings the movie is scheduled to shoot in Morocco at some point and, according to a recent article in The Milford Daily News, location scouts have been looking for filming locations in Framingham, MA.
The article states:
Columbia Pictures location manager Mark Fitzgerald is scouting in and around his hometown of Framingham for a farmhouse where Tom Hanks’ character would live during filming of the upcoming biopic Captain Phillips….Fitzgerald has been scouring the area for a “simple farmhouse” home for the screen version of Phillips, who lives in Vermont. He said he has found lots of options between Rte. 128 and Interstate 495, including several in Framingham. “Being from Framingham, I’m always trying to sell my town,” he said. “I’m very proud of where I come from.”
Despite rumors that the movie will definitely film in Mass. for “one week” next month, the Massachusetts Film Office told us they have not heard from the production company about shooting in the state.
Though we can’t confirm the movie will shoot in Massachusetts, or that they stick to the Feb. 13 start date, the fact that location scouts are taking time out to explore MA locations is probably a good sign that it is a possibility.
If you have any scoop about Captain Phillips or its filming locations, let us know at olv@onlocationvacations.com and we’ll be on the look out for more information about the shoot as well.
Sony Pictures is set to release the movie on March 22, 2013.
