The Santa Barbara Film Festival kicks off today with the world premiere of Lawrence Kasdan’s Darling Companion, starring Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline and Dianne Wiest. The opening night program also will include a showing of the new Pixar short film, La Luna.
The festival, which runs through Feb. 5, will close with Nadine Labaki’s anti-war comedy Where Do We Go Now?
For its centerpiece gala, the Santa Barbara Film Festival has booked the U.S. premiere of the documentary Samsara, from director Ron Fricke and producer Mark Magidson.
The festival is also set to honor recent Oscar nominees Demian Bichir (A Better Life), Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), as well as Patton Oswalt (Young Adult), Andy Serkis (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) at its 2012 Virtuosos Award program on Feb. 3.
Several other Oscar nominees will also receive awards throughout the fest including Viola Davis, who will receive the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, Christopher Plummer, who will get the Modern Master Award, Martin Scorsese, who is set to receive the American Riviera Award, and Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo will be honored with the Cinema Vanguard Award.
