A pilot/reporter for a local Albuquerque, NM TV station spotted a new movie set just outside the city this week which is believed to be for The Lone Ranger.
From above, the reporter was was able to spot the authentic-looking old west town in the undeveloped Rio Puerco Valley, just west of Rio Rancho. The New Mexico Film Office would not confirm that the set was for The Lone Ranger but, according to KASA, “industry insiders say it is.”
The set is quiet a distance from another construction site our readers have spotted in Grant County, which is also rumored to be a set for the film.
The movie is causing a buzz in the southwest because it stars Johnny Depp as Tonto, alongside Armie Hammer in the title role. A few weeks back there were even several rumored sightings of Depp in Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. Though we never confirmed Depp was among them, we do know there was a group of scouts and producers looking for potential locations in those areas around the same time.
The movie was set to begin filming in New Mexico this month, but the date may have been pushed back. According to EG Casting, who is handling extras for the New Mexico shoot, they have been pushed back two weeks and “won’t need extras until March.”
In addition to New Mexico, it has been confirmed the movie will also be filming in Colorado and Utah. Yesterday, Sande Alessi Casting announced they would be holding open casting calls in the Greater Utah area for those interested in being extras in the film.
A recent post on their Facebook page says:
We will be shooting in Creede, Colorado and Moab, Utah this summer. If you are local to these areas and interested in working, please stay in touch with this page. Open casting call dates and locations coming soon. Thanks all! Sande
You can “like” their Facebook page and get more information here.
As for right now, one of our L.A. sources told that they have been doing camera tests at Smashbox Studios in Hollywood this week as well.
