On March 13, Robert De Niro and and Paul Weitz made an appearance at The New York Times’ Times Talks series to discuss their new film, Being Flynn, which was directed by Weitz and starring De Niro.
The movie was shot in New York City last spring under the title Another Night or Another Night In Suck City as it is based on the book Another Bullshit Night in Suck City by Nick Flynn. In the book, Nick documents his time working in a Boston homeless shelter where he finds his father (played by De Niro).
One of our readers, George, was on hand for the Times Talks event and sent us these photos. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and John Cusack will also participate in the Times Talks series next month. You can find more information about those events here.
De Niro also found himself in hot water this week after cracking a joke about the country having a “white First Lady” again at an Obama fund raiser held at the Greenwich Hotel in NYC on March 19.
He told a crowd of about 90 people that it was “too soon” for a white first lady. “Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white First Lady?”, De Niro asked.
After Newt Gingrich called on President Obama to apologize for the comments, saying, “What De Niro said last night was inexcusable and the president should apologize for him”, De Niro apologized himself (sort of).
In a comment today De Niro said, “My remarks, although spoken with satirical jest, were not meant to offend or embarrass anyone — especially the First Lady.”
You can watch De Niro’s much less controversial Times Talks interview at Fora.tv.
No one got the joke…Robert DiNero has always married women of color…his daughters are women of color….if anything, what he said about the first lady was a compliment.
