Right now, it appears the signs indicate they are prepping to shoot Twelve Years A Slave at the plantation later this month.

@CrystalSorrow @olv Something titled 12 years is being filmed at St Joseph Plantation in Vacherie, La… Its likely construction.

According to Louisiana Entertainment Twelve Years A Slave, starring Brad Pitt, will begin a seven week shoot around New Orleans on June 25.

The movie is based on Solomon Northup’s memoir chronicling his experiences as a free black man who was kidnapped in New York in 1841 and sold into slavery in Louisiana.

  1. Last night my family and I were at Chili’s restaurant in Gonzales, LA and a group of people sat in the table next to us shortly after. We were shocked to look over and see Steve McQueen, Garret Dillahunt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and another woman and man. I’m not sure who the woman was.The other male was an actor that we recognized, but I’m not positive as to who he was because he had a full beard and looked different than usual. They laughed and talked, had drinks then headed out about an hour later. They seemed friendly and happy, and appeared to have a fairly uninterrupted evening, it didnt look like many people there recognized them. Can’t wait to see them on the big screen!

  2. Great! Even though I had high hopes about this film, the fact that they’re filming at all these cliche locales and doing so NOT in Central Louisiana where Northup’s story actually took place, but around New Orleans tells me that yet again this will be another fake mockery of Louisiana.

I’m sure all the characters will sound like Jeff Foxworthy, Paula Dean, Scarlet O’Hara, and the cast of Swamp People! There’ll probably be random mardi gras themed events daily, crawfish for breakfast, alligators in the front yard and all the usual nonsense.

A great opportunity for an historical film in which decendents of the original families involved and in fact many of the original sites within the book are still available and easily accessible but no, probably going to be just another True Blood, Cajun Pawn Stars style hee-haw mess.

Thanks film industry. We really appreciate it.

    • Dude… calm down. Why are you so angry? You’re assuming way too much here. We don’t even know how much of the film takes place on the plantation. We don’t even know how much of the film differs from the original memoir, let alone the plot.
And please. Tell me where the heck you’ve seen a stupid film like that. I’d love to hear.

  3. A big THANK YOU goes out to Bass Films, Ltd, now filming “Twelve Years A Slave” for utilizing LOCAL BUSINESSES!! Violins, cases, bows, accessories, banjo, mandolin and a custom made “circa 1840” violin case have been provided by Keith Davis-Violin Shop in Hammond, Louisiana. Northrup was a violinist and continued to “fiddle” for dances and parties while enslaved in Louisiana.
