Travel Inspiration: Woody Allen’s ‘To Rome With Love’

Woody Allen seems to be making a habit out of taking some of the world’s most beautiful cities, like Barcelona, Paris, and now Rome, and turning them into the centerpieces of his movies.

In his latest, To Rome With Love, Woody prominently features some of Rome’s most famous landmarks like the Villa Borghese, Piazza del Popolo, and the Spanish Steps.

The movie brings together four stories revolving around “a well-known American architect reliving his youth, an average middle-class Roman who suddenly finds himself Rome’s biggest celebrity, a young provincial couple drawn into separate romantic encounters, and an American opera director endeavoring to put a singing mortician on stage” – all set in Allen’s idyllic version of the Italian city.

Villa Borghese

The grounds and ponds of the Villa Borghese are the backdrop for Monica and Jack’s tumultuous love story. The city’s most famous park is often thought of as the “big green heart” of the city. The park is also home to the Etruscan museum, the Globe Theater, and a zoo. You can learn more at turismoroma.it.

Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo is the square where Milly gets lost while looking for a hairdresser and ends up embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime journey through Rome. Piazza del Popolo is located between Pincio and the banks of the Tevere. Historic churches, fountains, and monuments make this a favorite hang out for both locals and tourists.

Spanish Steps

“This city is really special,” Hayley says in the film as she overlooks the Spanish Steps. “I could stand here all night, it’s too beautiful.” With Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti at the top, Europe’s widest staircase is also its most famous.
