Unless you’ve been on a media fast this week you probably already know NBC has made it official – Jimmy Fallon will take over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno in 2014.
The change also means The Tonight Show will move back to New York City for the first time since Johnny Carson relocated to Burbank, CA in 1972.
“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I am pleased to welcome ‘The Tonight Show’ back to its first home here in the Empire State,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement yesterday. “Today’s announcement builds on the recent surge of television and film production happening here in New York that has restored our state as a global film production capital and driven the creation of new jobs and business growth throughout the state. I welcome ‘The Tonight Show’ home.”
The Tonight Show will receive benefits through the state’s film tax credit program prompting language to be includes in the 2013-14 state budget that extends benefits to similar TV shows. The Tonight Show move was so crucial to the tax credit it is being called the “Jimmy Fallon tax credit.”
But, that won’t be the only venue change taking place on NBC. The network also announced America’s Got Talent will shoot next season at Radio City Music Hall. America’s Got Talent will air live from the Radio City beginning this July.
These changes are great news for New Yorkers and NYC tourists as it will mean more opportunities for celeb sightings, but it also means Leno fans are running out of time to see the current Tonight Show in Burbank.
