Most of The Shawshank Redemption was filmed on location in Mansfield, Ohio but the most poignant scene in the movie, the very last scene where Red walks across the beach toward Andy, was filmed on St. Croix.
The scene was shot at the Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge on the southwest point of St.Croix.
The beach isn’t just one of the mot beautiful in the Caribbean, it is also a refuge for endangered wildlife, including the leatherback sea turtles that come ashore to nest and lay eggs on the beach each year.
Since the refuge’s top priority is protecting wildlife, only hiking, wildlife observation, and nature photography is allowed on the beach, which is only open from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays and is closed completely during peak turtle-breeding season from late April to August.
If you’re on St. Croix but can’t make to Sandy Point, you can still get a taste of The Shawshank Redemption. The scene in which Andy drives a convertible along the coast was filmed on North Shore Rd between Salt River and Cane Bay.
