Filming has commenced on Gus Van Sant’s The Sea of Trees in Massachusetts this week.

Matthew McConaughey and and Ken Watanabe have been filming in the F. Gilbert Hills State Forest off Mill Street in Foxboro, MA for the past couple of days. The movie is also using the recreation hall and chapel at Cocasset River Recreation Area – which they scheduled to rent again on Aug. 14 – in addition to the Mill Street location.

The movie stars McConaughey as a man who goes to the Aokigahara forest at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan, the site of numerous suicides where he encounters a Japanese man (Watanabe) who has lost his way. Together, the two men begin a journey of self-reflection and survival. The film also stars Naomi Watts as McConaughey’s wife.

The Sea of Trees will shoot in various locations around Massachusetts through September before moving to Japan.
