The many prisons of ‘Orange Is The New Black’

The Danbury, Connecticut prison that inspired Piper Kerman to write Orange Is The New Black is back in the news this week as RHONJ Teresa Giudice begins her own sentence at FCI Danbury.

But, the Netflix series based on Piper’s best-selling tell-all doesn’t take place in the real-life Danbury prison, instead it is set in a prison in Litchfield, NY. This is a source of confusion for residents of Connecticut and upstate New York since there is an abandoned jail in Litchfield, CT and there is, well, nothing in Litchfield, NY (we actually took a drive out to Litchfield last summer and found little more than a few cows and a couple of horses).

As if all of this isn’t confusing enough, most of the show’s interiors are filmed at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens and the exteriors are shot at the Rockland Children’s Psych Center in Orangeburg, NY.
