It was recently announced that instead of releasing a sequel to 2013’s The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, the popular book series will be rebooted as a new TV series and, now, we know exactly when production will begin on the new project.

According to @lemon_buzz, “the TV series Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments begins filming in Vancouver in May 2015.”

Though the cast for the new series has not been announced, rumor has it the show will have an all new cast and will not include the stars of City of Bones – Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, and Jemima West.

“The story is so broad and the novels are so dense that we’re actually now talking about doing it as a limited series for television,” Producer Don Carmody explained. “The first book would be the first year and then assuming that goes well, the second book, the third book, the fourth… there are six books. So that’s what we’re looking at.”

Stay tuned for more casting and filming info. Got scoop about the new TV series? Let us know at olv@onlocationvacations.com!

  1. i think that this is stupid!!!!!!! do people not know how many movies made crap money in the box office and still continued to show more of them. we watch so many bull crap movies that i have never even heard of and i wind up loving them. i absolutely loved this movie because the characters gave off a certain persona that made me feel like i wasnt just watching a movie, but that i was watching my visions from the book come to life. and why would the characters be changed?? what is the point of that?! do the producers not know how many fans they would be upsetting? who cares if it didnt make as much money as twilight. not many movies do and the first movie was not as great as the rest but it got so much better as the movies progressed! stupid.

    • I agree! I think the original cast should return to continue their journey. I even agreed with their choices for future characters, example Sigourney Weaver as the Inquisitor. After seeing the movie, I read the entire Mortal Instrument series as well as Infernal Devices, Bane’s Chronicles, and The Shadowhunters Codex. Being a Young Adult only in my mind, I think they should have reached out to a broader demographic. To this day, trying to find the movie on Cable is a challenge.

    • Did you even read the books? The fans are already upset, why do you think the ratings were so bad? The movie was a horrible adaptation of the book. I was outraged as was every other fan I talked to who saw the movie. The took and amazing book series and absolutely trashed it. Doing a tv series gives them room to fit all of the important parts in. Hopefully they do a better job with this. They need to pretend like the movie didn’t exist and start from the beginning. Even though they already ruined a major plot point for everyone who hadn’t read the books. It has the potential to be great and I cant wait to see how they do.

    • I think they should use the same actors because they all just fit well together. I think the film failed not because of the actors they used, but because they left out a lot of important information about Valentine. Because many people have read the books they would know exactly what happens. I read each book seven times (i am crazily obsessed) and I know every fine detail of each book and the film was so different from the book. the start of the film was good and then it just got lost. I hope that they use the same actors. The film makers need to concentrate on what information of the story they put in because even the smallest detail becomes the biggest detail in the last book.

      • honestly i agree i think they should keep the cast but unfortunetly they cant cause the people who made the movie (Sony) and the people producing the tv series (abc) are two separate companies, and movie actors and tv actors have seperate contracts and availability and time, although they didnt do their best on the movie and left out key details hopefully the tv series will be more clarified and understandable ~~~~~ i hope i gave u clarification on some things however i am not the educated on the situation i have done research thank you!! btw im on a hotel computer so i probably will not be able to see nor reply to any follow-up comments thanks hope i helped bye!!!!!

  2. I think this is a good idea. I do not know how I feel about a different cast, though. I mean, I wasn’t a huge fan of the original casting, but those are the faces people accociate with TMI. I cannot wait to see what they do with the show. I feel like they will be able to fit more book content into a TV show, than they can in a movie, strictly because they have more available room, being able to stretch a book through a whole season.

  3. The only thing I can hope for with this is that we get a new cast.
So many of the movie’s casting choices were so poor it wasn’t surprising the movie didn’t do well.
Luke and Jocelyn were well cast but underused given it was the 1st book, and I really doubt either actor could come back on a network tv-show budget. Dorothea was a good pick aswell but with NCIS:NOLA I don’t see CCH Pounder having time unfortunately. Pangborn and Blackwell were good, and hopefully they can come back.
But especially a new Jace then a new Simon, a new Clary, a new Alec, a new Isabelle and a new Valentine are all good things for this tv show to work.

And I know he’s going to be in Daredevil in some capacity but I’d love to see Gideon Emery of Teen Wolf in this in some capacity.

  4. They definitely should keep the original cast and keep doing the movies. If they are not making the rest of the movies then at least keep the same cast for the series. They were great together!

  5. I the original cast for the tv series would fallow the movie. They where amazing I love the movie I probably wouldn’t watch the show unless the cast was the original.

  6. I can’t believe they are turning these into tv shows. Whatever works, just so I can the actor who plays Jace again. I love him and everyone who play the other characters. I love the books and I can’t help but keep reading them even though I work 30 hours a week and I go to school for full time. I can’t help myself but read them everyday. I try to find time to read them. Even though, I already read the first third books, I am willingly read them again which I did. I got my mother into the books. I never knew about the books until I saw the movie. If it wasn’t for the movie, I would of never met Jace and Clary. I feel one with them and everyone else in the book. I hope to God they keep the media for the book going. Since some have read the books, we want to see how they will play it out for the movies. Please I swear I hope someone from the movie sees what I am saying and hope to hear from all of their fans of how much we book they keep it going. Thank you cassandra clare for bringing this series into my life!

  7. I can’t wait for the tv series! As someone who loves the books, I felt like the movie didn’t explore the Shadowhunter world or the characters very deeply. The movie strayed very far from the book and it made it seem wishy washy while leaving behind certain themes that were important in the novel. I hope that when they are making the tv series they follow the books like a gospel, that way we won’t miss key things from the plot and the characters will have a chance to be explored in more depth and we’ll see them change and mature. As for the film cast, I would love to see them come back (I thought they did a pretty good job) but if they feel that it is necessary to recast the characters…then ok. (Plus I don’t have high hopes of them coming back since they are mainly movie actors) 🙁

  8. I believe they should keep the same cast, Jaime Campbell Bower and Lily Collins are perfect as Jace and Clary. I haven’t read the book when I first saw the city of bones and right after watching the movie I feel in love with the characters of this book, I got hooked up with this book because the actors/actresses in the movie DID a GREAT job in portraying their characters since then I started reading the book. So please keep the cast.

  9. I started reading the series because of the movie. I didnt like city of bones book but the the movie was amazing!!!!! I love the cast especially Lily Collins Jamie as Jace and Clary. I would prefer them make the books into movies, but if I can see it come to life im ok. City of bones movie is what made me read the series and now im obsessed. Im currently reading city of heavenly fire. As long as it isnt horrible. ( as I suspect it will be, considering that they’re not using any of the old cast.)

  10. I’m just grateful to smart folks that understand yes you can make money with the storyline in film or tv just understand your audience. As a major star trek fan I grew up on the tv series and they misjudged the audience so pulled the tv series, as fans we did not give up and finally we got another movie then came along numerous tv series and directions!
So by demanding and yelling and going on social media YES WE CAN GET BOTH suits just want to make a buck, we the fans spend those dollars need to tell them WE WANT THE SERIES OF BOOKS FILMED ……..period!!!! So I can’t wait to see the new show I’m wearing out my DVD of mortal instruments.
