This weekend John Krasinski’s highly anticipated horror flick, A Quiet Place, finally hits theaters.
The movie, which co-stars his wife, Emily Blunt, was filmed in various locations across upstate New York last fall, including downtown Little Falls. You can catch a glimpse of the town in the movie’s first trailer.
The official synapsis of the movie describes it as a “modern horror thriller in which a family of four must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. If they hear you, they hunt you.”
While speaking to USA Today, Blunt said A Quiet Place is a “metaphor for parenthood in many ways.”
“The dread that most parents feel sending their kids out into this incredibly brutal, fragile world that we’re in right now. Obviously A Quiet Place is like the magnified version of that,” Blunt said.
She continued, “But at the root of it, this is about a family that needs to communicate more than most families and they can’t. There’s an agony in that, an agony in living silently.”
Krasinski, Blunt, and the three actors who play their on-screen children, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, and Cade Woodward, spent just one day, Oct. 30, last year in Little Falls. The filming, which primarily took place on East Main St, drew a large crowd of onlookers as this was the first major motion picture to film in town.
It was an unseasonably cold day, even for upstate New York, which posed a challenge for the actors who, if you’ve seen the preview, spend most of the film barefoot. Between takes, Blunt and Jupe would carry young Cade back to the warmth of the abandoned storefront they were also using for the shoot.
Crews arrived a few days ahead of filming to turn the town into a post-apocalyptic ghost town by adding lots of dust and debris to the street and stores that line the street.
Most of the film was shot further downstate, in the Hudson Valley. New Paltz, Beacon, and Pawling, NY are also featured in the movie. The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail bridge in New Paltz is also prominently featured in the film’s trailer.
