2 Major Hollywood productions will shoot in Hawaii during 2010

Hawaii has often been a favored shooting location in the past because of its stunning natural resources, and next year will be no different, two major productions have been slated to shoot in Hawaii during 2010.

First, Warner Bros.’ will shoot Hereafter which is a “supernatural thriller along the lines of The Sixth Sense.” It will be directed by Clint Eastwood and will shoot on Maui; while the shooting will start in mid January; pre-production of the movie is supposed to begin next week; the movie is slated for a late-2010 release.

The movie is expected to bring many jobs to the island a close source says “The filming will require a lot of set building which will be done in warehouses and not on vacant land.” The production plans to hire 100 crew members from Hawaii. It is expected that some streets will be closed for filming but exactly where has not been released, as the company has not yet applied for permits either with the county or the state.

The second production to swing by Hawaii will be Universal Studio’s $150-million Battleship. Battleship follows a small fleet of American and international ships that for some reason get separated from the rest of the Navy and must take on an opposing fleet of alien ships that have arrived on earth. Production is expected to start sometime during summer, and last between 4 to 6 week, however exactly how long Battleship will film in Hawaii is still uncertain and really depends on the location scout who will be traveling to Hawaii during January.

Even though Battleship is set in the area around Hawaii, actual shooting might take place more in Australia than in Hawaii. According to sources this “has nothing to do with the tax incentives offered Down Under” but more the fact that there is a lack of available space in Hawaii,  Hawaii just doesn’t offer a water tank large enough to accommodate the production’s filming needs that may include sinking ships. The biggest one is the Hawaii Film Studio’s 96,000-gallon water tank  – built for the Baywatch Hawaii television series.

Just as Hereafter, Battleship production execs have been talking to some Hawaii based companies while looking for sound stage and production office space. Battleship has a release date of Aug. 5, 2011.
