Back in 2007, a script by Jon Spaihts, ‘Passengers’, landed as #3 for best-unproduced screenplay. Keanu Reeves’ Company Films was on board to produce this sci-fi tale but it wasn’t until recently, when the script was green-lighted by Morgan Creek, that it would be made into a movie.
Keanu Reeves will star in the lead role, James G. Robinson (‘Ace Ventura’, ‘Georgia Rule’) will produce, and Gabriele Muccino (‘Seven Pounds’, ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’) is in talks to direct ‘Passengers’. Muccino is expected to start shooting the film this summer though the location is still unknown.
‘Passengers’ is a sci-fi romancer, set in the future on a spacecraft making a centuries-long interstellar voyage to a new planet. Due to a computer glitch, a single passenger (Reeves) awakens from cryogenic sleep 90 years before anyone else. Faced with the prospect of growing old and dying alone, he, in turn, awakens a beautiful woman.
