Kevin Smith Begins Shooting ‘Red State’ in Los Angeles

Kevin Smith’s first horror movie, Red State, has finally started filming after being shelved for more than three years.

We had first heard about the film in 2007, but it was put on hold, and Smith began work on Zack And Miri Make A Porno instead. Back then, the plan was for the movie to be shot in Kevin’s home state of New Jersey, but now that production is actually underway, it turns out the entire movie will be shot in L.A.

John Goodman has just joined the cast of Red State which already includes Melissa Leo and Dermot Mulroney. The movie’s plot is loosely based on the life of Westboro Baptist Church leader Fred Phelps who is best known as the douchebag that pickets military funerals and holds up signs that say “God hates fags”, seems like a good fit for a horror flick.

Red State, which only has a budget of around $4 million, will hit theaters next year.

  1. Looks like the movie was shot at my high school in Whittier, Calif (Then called Lowell High which became a chiropractic college around 11980).
