After the first official screening of his new film Red State, Kevin Smith revealed that he wasn’t at the Sundance Film Festival looking for distribution because he was planning on distributing the film himself via a traveling roadshow.
The announcement came as a shock to the Sundance audience, after all, that’s usually why filmmakers show up in Park City, Utah. But, Smith’s always done things his way and so far it seems to be working for him.
The Red State USA Tour kicks off on March 5th at Radio City Music Hall, and will hit more than a dozen cities before the movie is officially released through Smith’s Smodcast Pictures on October 19th.
Smith and the movie’s star Michael Parks will be there for a post-film Q&A at each location which means its going to cost fans more than if they just wait and see it at their local multiplex. According to Smith, it is going to cost “probably 6, 7, maybe 10 times” what you normally pay to see a movie but he also promises, “we’re going to give you some cool shit.”
