Oscars 2011: The Best Picture nominations’ filming locations are as different as the movies themselves

Though our Most Travel-Inspiring Movie of 2010, Eat, Pray, Love didn’t get nominated for an Oscar, a few of other choices did!

Four of the ten films nominated for Best Picture this morning (True Grit, Winter’s Bone, Inception, and 127 Hours) were also included in our Top Ten Most Travel-Inspiring Films of the past year.

Winter’s Bone was our least likely choice for a cinematic source of travel inspiration but it does give an authentic look at the movie’s location, Branson, Missouri. We chose Inception because it was shot all over the world, in Tokyo, Morocco, Alberta, CA, on soundstages in the London and L.A., and of course, Paris. The Coen Brother’s True Grit inspired us to get our cowboy on in Granger, TX, and even though we’re too afraid to see 127 Hours, we’d love to see it’s filming location, Moab, Utah.

The rest of the Best Picture nominees didn’t make our Most Travel-Inspiring list but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have memorable locations. The Fighter captured the gritty side of Lowell, MA well The Social Network, which was filmed in nearby Cambridge felt like it was in another world.

Black Swan was primarily filmed at the Performing Arts Center of SUNY Purchase, with additional scenes shot in New York City. Surprisingly, The Kids Are All Right is the only movie nominated for a Best Picture Oscar that was filmed completely in L.A. while The King’s Speech, which was filmed in the U.K.,  is the only movie filmed entirely outside the U.S.

The ten picture nominees are rounded out by Toy Story 3, which of course has no real filming location, even though it feels like it does.

The 83rd Academy Awards hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway will air live February 27th on ABC. You can see the full list of nominations here.
