Michigan Filming Updates: ‘Five Year Engagement’, ‘Hung’ & ‘Detroit 1-8-7’

As we’ve reported, Jason Segel and Emily Blunt will be headed to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor at the end of the month to begin shooting The Five Year Engagement after the film secured more than $5 million in incentives from the state.

But they won’t be the only ones. The HBO series Hung will also soon be filming in the Detroit area again after receiving a $1 million film credit. The series is shot in Los Angeles but they do spend several weeks each season shooting exteriors in Michigan, where the series is set.

In addition to Five Year Engagement and Hung, Spy Kids 4 also received $1.8 million in incentives last month.

Unfortunately, the news isn’t so good for Detroit 1-8-7 which shot their first season in Detroit last year. A return to Michigan for a second season seems unlikely after a producer for the show confirmed that the series is leaving its studio space in Highland Park.

“ABC has decided to vacate the stage space for now considering the unclear future of the show,” said executive producer Jason Richman. “But no final decision has been communicated to us.”

It’s important to note that though the state has capped their incentives at $25 million,  that doesn’t mean Michigan filming will end completely once the fund has been depleted. As the Michigan Film Office has explained, there are several productions that shoot in the state each year without applying for incentives.
