Travel Inspiration: Plan a Romantic Getaway to Rodanthe

Two unsuspecting strangers find themselves alone in a quintessential coastal setting and begin a life changing romance. Sound like the perfect love story?

Nicholas Sparks thought so when he wrote the best-selling novel Nights in Rodanthe, now a major motion picture staring Richard Gere and Diane Lane. The film tells the story of a doctor (Gere) who is traveling to see his estranged son when he meets an unhappily married woman (Lane) at a North Carolina inn. The two are forced to weather a storm together and in the process find a love that will stay with them forever.

Filmed in the Outer Banks, Nights in Rodanthe is sure to become one of the year’s most travel inspiring films. The movie is not only named for, but is also set in Rodanthe, a small town on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in the Outer Banks, approximately 30 miles south of Nags Head, N.C. Rodanthe is the eastern most point of North Carolina, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Pamlico Sound to the west.

The town’s peaceful seaside charm is the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway without sacrificing the conveniences of a more urban setting. The Outer Banks offer dining, shopping, nightlife, and recreational activities to suit any taste. It is also easy to access any of the towns in the Outer Banks via North Carolina’s highways and bridges.

  1. One of our readers, Chris, sent us this interesting story about his house:

“My family’s home in Maine, which sits on one of the most beautiful beaches in Maine, was blessed to have Garret Blake (Costner/Newman) use our house for ‘Message in the Bottle’. My connection to your current story is that this film was Nick Sparks second feature film from his novels. In 1997 they took over our house for almost three months in the summer and choose this location to grab a similar back drop to the North Carolina Ocean setting. Our own coastline has some beautiful rocky shores with picture perfect light houses but we also have some great beaches. Interesting to see how Sparks (and great movie set designers//scouts) use the beauty of the ocean to compliment and enhance his romantic stories.”

Thanks to Chris for sharing and it is quite timely considering the recent passing of Paul Newman, R.I.P.

Sparks novel ‘Dear John’ is set to become a movie which will begin filming next month in South Carolina.

  2. Chris emailed us again and I wanted to share:

“I was Very sorry to hear of Paul (Newman) he was such a great guy while he was on set and the rest of the cast was great as well, even Sean Penn who came to visit his wife. I would encourage any one to visit our great rustic coastline (Phippsburg-York Maine) and we were also fortunate that Warner Brothers left our house just like the set excluding some props cause they were raving how many great antiques they found in our area.”

Chris is right, it is a lovely area and I encourage everyone to visit the Maine coast if you have the chance. Thanks again to Chris for sharing!
