James Franco & Rob Lowe among stars expected to be filming in San Francisco this summer

According to sfist.com, San Francisco will be crawling with A-listers this summers.

They’re reporting that Paul Thomas Anderson will start filming The Master, “about a persuasive man who starts a new religion in the 1950s, assumed to be based on Scientology”, in Vallejo soon. Philip Seymour Hoffman is expected to star, and possibly Leonardo DiCaprio too!

Rob Lowe will also to be in town to shoot Knife Fight, a drama “about the dark side of political operatives.” The movie is slated to begin filming in June.

James Franco, Heather Graham, Dev Patel, and Lilli Taylor have all signed onto Cherry, an indie about a cocaine-addicted lawyer who gets involved with an 18-year-old porn actress in the San Francisco adult industry. Cherry is also expected to begin San Fran sometime soon.

  1. I’ve heard that Cherry might be using Pier 80 for stages like Hemingway and Gellhorn. The Master should be filming in the Vallejo/Crockett area, and “out at sea” for a couple weeks, before going back to Los Angeles to film the rest. Knife Fight is currently setting up prod. offices. I’ll be on the look-out for all 3 productions.

  2. Wait–is that just a mess-up re: The Master, or have you actually heard that DiCaprio is supposed to be in it? PSH and Joaquin Phoenix are signed on in the leads.

  3. You can add to the “A-listers” working in SF this summer Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, who are the stars of “Five Year Engagement”.
I think most of the filming of “Engagement” is being done in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with a few of the last scenes filming in SF before it wraps.
Still waiting to see who’ll be doing local casting when they come to SF…

  4. Oh, and two more names to add to that “A-listers in San Francisco” list are Amy Adams and Joaquin Phoenix, who are confirmed for “The Master”. I don’t think Mr. DiCaprio is attached to this project as previously reported; to my knowledge he’ll go straight from Clint Eastwood’s “J Edgar” to the remake of the “The Great Gatsby”.
