It’s not uncommon to see Canadian and U.S. cities stand in for other nearby locales (for instance, Toronto was turned into NYC for Cosmopolis, and even Vancouver plays Santa Barbara in Psych) but it is a bit surprising to see a city across the pond being transformed into Philadelphia.
As we reported a few weeks back, World War Z is set in Philadelphia but is filming in various locations across Europe, including Glasgow, where the street around George Square are currently dressed with U.S. street signs, Philadelphia police cars, and posters announcing local events, all to make the area look like Philly.
And, ust as it would if it were actually filming in Philadelphia, the shoot is causing quite a stir. On Monday, the first day of shooting in the city, the Jolie-Pitt clan chartered an entire train to travel to Glasgow from London (they are staying at the famous Carnell House in Ayrshire), where they were greeted by hundreds of fans of photographers at Glasgow Central, but they were quickly whisked away to the set, before being mobbed by the crowd.
The Glasgow Common City Council has been documenting the city’s transformation into Philadelphia, along with filming locations and street closures, via Twitter.
Below are a few more of the photos they’ve sent out recently:
Shooting in Glasgow is expected to take between two to four weeks. If you spot them filming, let us know about it at olv@onlocationvacations.com!
It’s a shame they couldn’t come to the real Philadelphia and provide jobs and boost the local economy.
