‘Point Break’ remake in the works

Alcon Entertainment has announced plans to remake the 1991 Kathryn Bigelow action thriller ‘Point Break’.

Alcon principals Andrew Kosove (‘the Blind Side’) and Broderick Johnson (‘the Book of Eli’) secured rights to the project the week of the original film’s 20th anniversary from RGM Media.

Kosove and Johnson will produce along with Michael DeLuca (‘Moneyball’), John Baldecchi (’88 Minutes’), and Chris Taylor. RGM Media principal Devesh Chetty and investor John McMurrick, Chairman of Marloss Entertainment, will serve as Executive Producers.

In the original film, directed by Kathryn Bigelow (‘the Hurt Locker’) and produced by James Cameron (‘Avatar’), Keanu Reeves (‘the Matrix’) starred as Johnny Utah, an undercover FBI agent looking for a gang of bank robbers, led by Patrick Swayze’s Bodhi, amid the Southern California surfing scene.

The new version, with a screenplay by Kurt Wimmer (‘Salt’), will be set in the world of international extreme sports and also involve an FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring. But plot points beyond that have not been revealed by the filmmakers.

In addition to the feature rights, Alcon has also secured television and gaming rights to ‘Point Break’.

For the ’91 original, filming locations were set in Hawaii, California, Oregon and Utah.

No release date has been announced.
