Universal is currently developing a new version of the gangster film ‘Scarface’. The first version done in 1932 was produced by Howard Hughes and directed by Howard Hawkes. The classic movie starred Paul Muni and was based on the life of Al Capone. Brian De Palma put his own spin on the story in 1983, this time with Al Pacino playing Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee who rises to power in the Miami cocaine world.
Martin Bregman, who produced the 1983 ‘Scarface’, is producing the new version alongside Marc Shmugar (‘Untitled WikiLeaks Doc’). The updated version will include “common elements of the first two films: an outsider, an immigrant, (who) barges his way into the criminal establishment in pursuit of a twisted version of the American dream, becoming a kingpin through a campaign of ruthlessness and violent ambition.”
There’s no word yet on who will play the lead role or it’s release date.
