Quentin Tarantino filming scenes for ‘Django Unchained’ in Mammoth Lakes, CA this month

It looks like Quentin Tarantino is going to have a very white Christmas.

The director is prepping to film his next project, Django Unchained, in the ski resort town of Mammoth Lakes, CA.

According to The Sheet, the art department and crews are already in the area building exterior sets for the shoot which is expected to last 7-10 days.

The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jamie Foxx, Anthony LaPaglia and Don Johnson, and though it is still unknown which members of the A-list cast will be shooting in Mammoth, Film Mammoth’s Cleland Hoff promises, “We’re going to have some very notable people here in town before long.”

The production will be shooting in the area behind Chairs 13 & 14 and along the Mammoth Scenic Loop, among other locations while in town.

It appears the movie will likely begin filming in the area around the third week of December (Dec. 19).

Interestingly, a recent blog post claims that Django Unchained’s production team is also currently staying at a hotel near Lone Pine, CA, about 5 hours east of Mammoth. The post reads:

Every last room in our facility is booked for this production, which is a big deal for us since our slow season is a major economic slump period and we could use the major influx of revenue here. Any time any filming goes on here, be it for a major motion picture, independent film, or commercial, it brings everyone involved from actors and special effects people to caterers and coordinators, and they all need a place near— or on— location to stay. With the rugged outdoor scenery and beautiful landscape within a stone’s throw of Lone Pine, California, they end up here.

Though we have no reason to doubt the hotel clerk who posted the above information, we also haven’t been able to confirm where exactly they would be filming near Lone Pine, so if you have any scoop about the shoot, be sure to let us know at olv@onlocationvacations.com!

UPDATE: We have heard from several tipsters who have seen the crew around Lone Pines and have since learned it is on;y about an hour from Mammoth, be sure to let us know if you spot the cast or crew!

Django Unchained is being described as a Spaghetti Western about a slave-turned-bounty hunter (Django) who sets out to rescue his wife from Calvin Candie, a brutal Mississippi plantation owner.

The majority of the film will be shot in New Orleans beginning February 1, 2012.
