New video and updates from the set of ‘Game of Thrones’ in Iceland

The HBO series Game of Thrones recently began filming scenes for season 2 in Iceland, after wrapping up in Northern Ireland where they had been filming since June.

The series is primarily filming on the Vatnajökull glacier which stands in for the north side of the Wall in the story, home to the Others. In the first season Jon Snow (Kit Harrington), the illegitimate son of Lord Eddard, was killed after traveling there with the Night’s Watch.

“The scenes that we film the three weeks we’re here cover his fate once he progresses to the north of the Wall,” Producer Chris Newman revealed.

The series is expected to continue filming in Iceland through next week. So far the shoot is going well, despite difficult conditions. “We decided to come in the winter which is good given the look we were after but bad in terms of daylight. It is a challenge to finish shooting before nightfall. We have to make everything ready in the dark and illuminate the area so that we can work,” Newman explained.

It is rumored that HBO is already considering renewing the show for a third and fourth season which will be filmed back-to-back, meaning it probably won’t be long until the cast and crew returns to Iceland. The second season will return to HBO in April 2012.

In addition to Ireland and Iceland, Game of Thrones films in Morocco.

Above you can check out a new video from the Icelandic set which includes a first look at Rose Leslie in costume as Ygritte too.
