While Hollywood might think that incorporating the Occupy Wall Street movement into their TV series and movies is a good idea, one group doesn’t find this amusing at all, the real Occupy Wall Street protesters are anything but pleased.
Last Thursday Law & Order SVU crew had built a mock tent city for an episode based on the Occupy Wall Street movemen. Originally SVU was supposed to shoot there throughout last Friday, however the protesters thought otherwise and they moved in during the night and began dismantling the set.
Before long however a legion of police officers gathered telling everyone present that if they didn’t clear the area they would be arrested, this included protesters and production assistants alike.
Curt King, a spokesman for NBC Universal, said on Friday that the network had no comment about the occupation of the apparently rule-breaking set; neither did a spokeswoman for SVU.
Executive Producer Warren Leight was the only one who commented on the incident writing on his Twitter page, “We understand OWS emotions run high, and also protesters’ fear of having their images and history co-opted by corporate media — the irony here is the scene we couldn’t shoot portrayed OWS in a sympathetic light.”
No information has been released on whether the Law & Order SVU crew will scrap the episode or simply build a mock camp elsewhere, we will keep you updated as the story unfolds.
