UPDATE: ‘Doctor Who’ begins filming in New York City this month

As we reported a couple of weeks ago, Doctor Who executive producer, Caroline Skinner, recently said filming will take place in New York for the fifth episode of the show’s upcoming seventh season, but at the time there was little information about when filming would actually take place.

Now, a new report by Dr. Who TV suggests filming for the episode will take place this month in NYC. The website states:

Filming on the fifth episode of Doctor Who Series 7 kicked off last night. As previously reported the story is set in New York, with some filming due to take place on location later this month.

The show’s star Matt Smith also alluded to the NYC shoot in an interview posted today by The Independent:

“We will be making some Doctor Who in New York which is incredibly exciting.” [Matt] mentions that he was “quite jealous” when co-star [Karen] Gillan went off to the Big Apple recently to film the Jean Shrimpton biopic We’ll Take Manhattan, so this Doctor Who shoot is likely to make up for that.

With filming for the episode already underway in the U.K., it will likely only be a matter of a week or two before the cast arrives in NYC, so start looking out for those telltale “No Parking” signs on the streets of New York and be sure to let us know if you spot one via email at olv@onlocationvacations.com!

In the meantime, the Paley Center has announced a special event for Doctor Who fans taking place next week. Doctor Who: How It All Began—An Evening with Waris Hussein will take place on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:00 pm at the Paley Center in NYC. Check out the synopsis about the event from the Paley Center below. Tickets can be purchased here.

Climb into your TARDIS and travel back in time with us to November 23, 1963, to hear all about the making of “An Unearthly Child,” the very first Doctor Who episode ever aired, from the man who brought it to life, director Waris Hussein, who will recall what it was like being part of the creation of television’s longest-running science fiction series. In addition to a discussion and Q&A, the evening will include the screening of the episode, with live commentary provided by Hussein. After the event, the director will participate in an autograph session with attendees. (Autograph Policy: Waris will sign a personal item for $20 each.
