James Franco brings ‘Dangerous Book Four Boys’ and ‘The Broken Tower’ to NYC

One of our contributors, Denise, attended the James Franco book signing in New York recently and, as always, James had a few surprises for the audience.

James will also appear at the IFC Center this weekend with his film The Broken Tower, I’m not sure he finds time to sleep!

Check out all the details below:

I attended Franco’s The Dangerous Book Four Boys book signing at The Strand in NYC a couple of weeks ago. There were several people mixed in the crowd who were wearing masks and sheets like a ghost. I asked one of the staff why and he said there was going to be some performance art. Of course! The first thing they did was show a short film from Franco’s exhibit titled “Dicknose in Paris” where James wears a prosthetic penis on his face and pals around with 2 friends in France.

After this, the announcer called up “The Panel” which consisted of all the people in masks (among them James in a red hat mask that he kept taking off to wipe the sweat because it was like a sauna in there!) to come up front and sit facing the crowd. Then 2 “rebel” girls with handkerchiefs over their faces came running in yelling about bad working conditions and throwing fliers around. I have no idea what that was all about, but it was entertaining nonetheless. You never knew what is going to happen next. The woman in the pictures is artist Laurel Nakadate, who he worked with on The Glass Menagerie Performa art piece a few months ago.

James then took off his mask and came over to sit for an interview. He talked about all of his various projects like the Dicknose film and how the idea came after he got the prosthetic piece from Milk. Then he talked about My Own Private River and how Gus Van Sant gave him all the footage, then he mentioned the Saturday Night documentary that he swears will be coming out at some point. He mentioned how he just finished Spring Breakers and had to rap in front of people. He also talked about Francophrenia and his General Hospital meta-experience.

Tonight Franco will appearing at the IFC Center in NYC for a Q&A following the 7:35 pm screening of The Broken Tower and an extended introduction at the 10:00 pm screening. Tomorrow he participate in a second Q&A following the 5:10 pm screening and an extended introduction at the 7:35pm screening. For more information, visit IFCCenter.com.

Thanks to Denise for the photos too!
