Filming is scheduled to begin later this month on Fruitvale, the true story of Oscar Grant, a 22 year old black man who was shot and killed by Bay Area Rapid Transit police in 2008.
The title of the film is derived from the name of the station where Oscar was killed. The case became even more significant because there were many witness who not only saw the shooting, but also recorded it on their cell phones leading to much controversy.
Michael B. Jordan will star as Oscar and Octavia Spencer will play his mother. Tristan Wilds is also set to star.
Fruitvale was written and will be directed by Oakland native Ryan Coogler. Much of the film will also be shot in Oakland, CA with additional scenes filmed in L.A.
