According to various Icelandic publications, two big budget movies that have been filming in the U.S. will move to Iceland for the duration of their shoots.
Tom Cruise, who was in NYC last week filming scenes for Oblivion, was expected to arrive in Iceland over the weekend to continue filming the movie. Before spending a few days in NYC, Oblivion was also shot in Louisiana. Cruise is expected to spend the next 3 or 4 weeks filming at various locations in Iceland.
In addition to Oblivion, Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which is currently filming in NYC, will also spend a few weeks filming in Iceland this fall. According to East Iceland’s Austurglugginn, a cast and crew of more than 200 people are expected to shoot scenes in Seyðisfjörður in September.
Iceland has become a popular location for film and TV productions in recent years thanks to their unique landscape and generous film incentives.
Iceland is also a lot closer than most people realize. Though it seems like an exotic location, flights to Reykjavik from NYC only take about 5 hours and start around $1000, a bargain when you consider Iceland is about as otherworldly as you can get without leaving Earth.
